Color Me Gone

Vanish is a research system designed to give users control over the lifetime of personal data stored on the web or in the cloud. Specifically, all copies of Vanish encrypted data — even archived or cached copies — will become permanently unreadable at a specific time, without any action on the part of the user or any third party or centralized service.

What would be a good use case for that? I'm having difficulty figuring out why *I* would need it, but I bet there is a good example I'm just not thinking of.

Security for information with limited-time usefulness if the same information creates a vulnerability (in the wrong hands) which lasts for a less limited time

Yeah I get what it does, but I'm looking for a real world use case as I can't currently think of one.

Ok, let's say you've got your projected Cuban sugar yields and you're interested in projecting a big Communist victory in the agricultural productivity game but the sugar yields aren't up to Hawaii standards, but you might need the real numbers anyway as a practical matter (for allocation of machinery, workers, etc., just until harvest in September), so you craft your own projected huge yield numbers for release but keep the real numbers for their practical purposes. But you'll only need them until September, and because you want to minimize the possibility of someone catching onto your scam, you set them to vanish after September 30.

What's so hard to understand about that?

I think a better solution would be an automatic wipe of the data rather than making it "unreadable." I.E., encrypted.
