I have seen a number of ICMP packet requests at my
network door. My firewall catches them and I am working with my internet provider to track down the culprits.
HOWEVER if you are using this Symantec Norton product you should read this:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... 01.17.html
CONTENT ADDED:
this from security focus:
http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/6598/info/
funny thing is it gives you instructions on how to perform the exploit.

I'm a real basic bone head, (computer wise), and I had the vague idea that the "Norton" program was gonna protect my computer.
Since I've had it installed, I've had my e-bay accoount hacked into, been sent numerous viruses, and have even had a credit card acct. stolen from an online purchase.
This is the second computer system I've bought, the same damn thing happened with the 1st one, and it shut it down.

So many places in my hardrive, files and folders will not allow me access, (they often say "shell.windows", and "forbidden", refusing me access to my own stuff.

All kind of crazy stuff is stored on my computer, and it's not my stuff, but even running "Norton" can't seem to even detect it, and not to even hope remove it.

I've heard this is the place where people who KNOW their stuff are at, so I'm open to any and all advice.

Norton is shit, plain and simple. Why people get the idea that it's worth a shit is beyond me. I use Zone Alarm for a firewall, and I use KAV and McAfee both for AV's. I don't use the background scan on either. I only scan on demand. Between the three, I'm pretty well protected.

Sounds like you need to run some spyware scans too. Get AdAware and Spybot S&D. Both are available in Shell City.

Avg anti virus is a sound AV program I use Keiro personal firewall as recommended by the late great JohnT (a moment of slience).
