Shell City and/or Daily Rotation -- Got something to say?

Why no updates?

Postby Knasen » 12/10/10, 1:50 pm

Why is there no updates since 19 Nov?
Just curious. :)

Shame. I got used to the (almost) daily updates of free software until the site changed hands.

Perhaps on Windows ;-) [none of the following is listed on SC]

KTurtle

gSTM

pgAdmin

SpiderOak (also available on Windows)

Pithos

Docky

Geany

OK, I've heard from cuttheredwire. He's having difficult times and can't take over Shell City as planned. Cheers to him, and good luck on his studies.

Meanwhile, in a few days, we'll go to Plan B, unless someone else wants to take over. Hell, I did it for more than 10 years. Email me if you're interested.

Likewise, after around 12 years comin' here,
I don't want Shell Extension City or the list to close. :(
Even if you just keep the database accessable from DR.

Maybe the "BGH's" and "free beers"
could pool our efforts regularly and go from there ????
Perhaps open a new chapter for Linux et-al users?
I know some of us regulars have switched.

I'd be willing to help out too, if I have the spare time.

Perhaps we could have a specially accessable page where we post our findings and review it once a week or something,
and publish the best of what we think/find after that?
Make it a joint  effort?

If Bob was amenable he could manage it and have the final say.
It could still be "Shell Extension City", (or the best of?)
because most of us feel like it's one of our homes.

Well, you guys figure it out. Then I'll give the password to the person charged with posting.

Just so you know, plan B is to leave the site, db, and message board still available, but no more daily updates, and with a big link to DR in the middle of the front page.

i have'n used phpBB in a long while but i think there is a way to set up a forum depending on "rank"

then just have whoever discuss wants going on the page from there then who ever is posting picks which ones go on when.

I know personally i usually find one app a week or so that i find useful though not always free.

I like the linux idea too.. give me a good reason to start booting it at home :-)

I like the Linux idea. Do theme posts that come from new applications and present offerings at SC.

Found this recently.
Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

Could do a theme or two, and give ppl tools to acquire, burn and eval or install the Ubuntu.

Also some curation and improved search along with
some ontology would go along way to being archival and improve the experience here.

Good morning and Merry Christmas to all.
I think I just saw Santa fly by my bedroom window!!!

Seeing as it's been a bit over 24 hours since my last post, and because I'm such an impatient SOB, I'm gonna run a few more thoughts past you all in the hope that I can fire a bit more interest from a few other people who haven't responded so far.

It looks like Bob has decided he's done his fair share of the load,
and I don't really blame him for feeling he needs a rest.
Our best wishes go with you old pal.
Thanks for a great decade.

Gerry,
You seem to have a bit of experience with administration of this site.
(Keeping all the naughty posts in check). I've enjoyed sparring with you when we do, and watching you and SOD doing the same from time to time. It's a real feature of this site and it just wouldn't be the same without those regular jousts.
What would you say about doing a bit of the admin load, if we were to keep this thing going?

DonU,
I've always enjoyed your presence.
(I had a bit to do with lobbying for your return after you spat the dummy that time) and I'm really glad you decided to come back.
That showed a lot of character!
And at times without your regular posts this would have been a much quieter site. You've said a bit already.
What else would you like to see happen?
And how do you think that you could possibly contribute.

And seeing as I mentioned Vipe before (who I know had a fair bit to do with helping to do the initial designs for the site).
I seem to recall that one of the main reasons he left was because he went over to Linux? What's the chance that some-one might have his e-mail address and could invite him to come by and see us and see what he could possibly do with us?

And what about all the other lost souls who we haven't seen for quite a while?
Old friends like Shady, AndrewB, SloppyGoat, Polgrez and MillieMac (as far as I can recall, one of our very few female members :D ). Maybe some-one might have contact details for them and they would be interested in what is happening here?

If we're gonna get this show on the road we need to keep the wheels turning and not let ourselves get bogged down with any negative feeling about what we may be losing. Keep our chins high and ride out the storm.

Anyhow, by now no doubt you're probably a bit tired of reading my rants so I'll sign off soon. Sorry for raving on for so long. This site means a lot to me.

And seeing as this is Christmas Day,
I'd like to wish you and your families a very happy and joyous Christmas.

All the best,
Don
