Got my hammer out, and now I'm gonna open the box

Well I've been running this old Pentium box long enough, lately. So decided to spring for a new motherboard. I was able to find a Shuttle AI61, Slot A, motherboard w/900mhz CPU (AMD K70 ), I know it's not the newest thing out, but me being as cheap as I am I couldn't afford not to pick this up. Under $160.00, including dual fans. I'll have to admit I wasn't happy with the so called shipping and handling fee, but then again, not out of the realm of the norm. $18.00 , but that includes shipping an ATX mid-tower box thrown in (Power supply affixed). So I'm pretty well satisfied. Fired right up, after replacing some memory I had laying around. Don't remember what I traded for it. Too bad three big sticks too. So all in all this project comes well under $200.00, by salvaging, boards and drives (cables came with the new board) from my old box. Just doing my part for recycling.

Moving up in the world John , if your not a big gamer then that should do ya for anther year or so for $200 i wouldn't complain

I'm thinking bout my next upgrade with tax returns and all.. thinking Dual Amd XP 2000+ w1gb Ram and Lain-Li Case. Going to make this box (dual 800 2gb) into my File server. It should add some zip to my net work

Sounds like a sweet setup. Not a big gamer here. With the price of boards and cpu's coming down, it's a good time to upgrade. Some real sweet deals out there. BTW if aluminum is the deciding factor you might want to look.......Here

has there been a MB that has stood out from the crowd for amds XP chips? Looking at a 1.7 266 DDR frontside 3 40 gig IBM 7200 deskstars. Considering a tape drive too. Any sugestions on the tape drive? I want command line availabilty for the TD.

No suggestions on the tape drive, but for the mobo, you might want to look at the Abit KT7A. It has normal primary and secondary IDE channels, and two more IDE channels on the mobo that can be configured to do RAID. One of my co-workers has that setup, and loves it. I'm not doing RAID on mine, but that may be the next step. The performance boost is apparently signifigant.

Go to http://www.abit-usa.com/eng/product/mb/kt7a.htm
for specs.

But you are gonna want to have DDR memory. This MB only supports SD.

*squints at picture* It also looks like it doesn't have the RAID option actually soldered onto the board. You would have to do that yourself if you ever decided to go to RAID.

Dang, this has almost no specs on it at all. You have anymore info that we can look at Dennis?

This Board Looks good.. if i don't go dual this is the one i'm getting. Even if you don't do raid the 2 extra ide ports are nice. IDE Raid i've found it too unstable to beconsidered an option for me. the slight increase in speed vs. the raid braking and having to start over.. hmm.. (although ghost makes it alot easier)

This Case is the one i'm looking at. Lian-Li make some kick ass cases no edges and modular to make it really easy on people crawling in their cases all the time. Also disipate heat faster and are lighter. which also helps those carry'n their cases (especially us smaller folk) much more expensive though even with out a powersupply

Any suggestions on a board, Sod, would be out of the park unless some idea of end functionality were included. For instance I didn't want one with onboard sound or video, as I like a more selective choice. Your needs might be similar or far afield. My 2¢ worth.

In the continuing saga of Athlons and Windows, it seems I'm generating errors that never surfaced in my Pentium install. First it was a shutdown error. When I would choose shutdown , it would re-start. I would have to shut it down 3 or 4 times before it would unload completely. Then I installed the #2 Servicepack and the fun really began. Then it would generate a different error every time I shutdown. BSOD in 2K. A first for me. He, he. If it can be screwed up on a box, Ill find it. Gonna uninstall Servicepack and see if I can gain some legitimacy out of this "New" board.

I'm trying it this time without loading the MB drivers and see what generates from that.

Like a top. Without the so-called mobo drivers, there has been nary a glitch and system performance hasn't degraded one iota. ;p

OK, I've installed intake and exhaust fans keeping in mind the slight pressurization of the case. A Thermaltake Golden Orb CPU fan (sweet looking piece of machinary for the price). All fans are thermistor controlled. All cables ( IDE and power) wrapped and tied.
Now I want to build a frame for my intake filter (Hoover Final Filter, of the vacuum fame). Going to have to experiment to achieve optimum size, this is a three layer filter for 4, 5, 6 micron sizes, so should be more than adequate.
