New slogan:
"Shell City Message Boards - The only place where you can go from talking about LAN help to Nicole Kidman in zero seconds flat." <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif"> <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif">

Bob, from the description you gave - it sounds like i'm some sort of redneck aussie, ha! I'm in Houston and the only thing redneckish about it is the world's 2nd largest rodeo - in fact, it's going on right now. YEEHAW! ugh..

Back on topic here - thanks for your help and ideas, they are appreciated mucho.

I decided I am going to put the other computer in here - and connect them via a 5-port router. I'll definetly look into the 3com ethernet cards - all but one of them already have one from factory unit.

I've heard linksys router was good too - is there any other brand you've heard as good?

Thanks guys. <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Watch out for hubs that are inexpensive. There are reasons for that. Like, they split loads absolutely equially so that even if you have a 100mb/s connection on a four port hub you get only 25mb/s. Also, make sure they are 10/100mb/s and not just 10mb/s hubs. I've almost fallen for that many times.

Nicole Kidman is a hottie. <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif">

Being the networking newbie that I am , what's the difference between using a hub and a router and its advantages and disadvantages? Haha I'm so lost.

Just the same friggin' newbie as you, but I got it working, so... router needed for sharing broadband connection (dsl here, and I needed a router (specs) that worked with that specific dsl provider). Some routers function as hub too (better look at that, bought one that didn't, so bought a seperate hub later...). I'm over the ocean, think syscom is a cheap brand just here, but it works perfectly. Modem in router, router and comps in hub, I barely have the time to get a beer...

In general, Thats how hubs work.. Basically shared bandwidth. Its almost never absolutly equal it depends on what exactly is going on on the network. If you got 4 like machines hooked up and are copy'n like files across it them maybe it'd be close. Thats why there is a huge advantage in getting a swtich, which nowdays are not much more in price unless you want a managed one. But as always you do get what you pay for.

If your just use'n it to surf the web and that sorta thing.. I wouln't worry bout it.. unless you find a cheap swtich, i'd go with a hub. Of course if you are going to do to gaming or copy 500+ files across the network then a Swtich would be so much nicer.

I ended up buying a 4-port LinkSys Router, 2 ethernet cards and some cat5 cable. I'm ready to go - anything else I need to take into consideration?
