Okay, here's the deal:

The "Cable Guy" is coming Monday to hook up the connection for broadband (finally, amen).

I need to network 3 computers together total. The cable outlet will be in a room where 2 (XP box, 98se box) of the computers reside - 1 (98se box) is in another room in the house. I will no doubt be doing using wireless to the machine in the other room - and these two straight cable via the router (or these two wireless as well).

How would/did you personally go about setting this up? Any hardware you would recommend for the complete setup? Any and all ideas are welcome and appreciated for this LAN newbie.

Before the cable guy gets there, I'd separate a machine and let him install it on that.... I think networks are verboten unless you want to pay extra...

Yep, that's why I requested self-install - they are just going to route the cable to this room, give me the modem, and the details.

It's pointless in them setting it up with one computer when I'm going to _have_ to network 3 computers.

Have you investigated the app DC Share. Listed on the ShellCity front page under the entries for 02/20/02, for your situation?

Also--I'm sure we've got other cable network stuffin the db, Vipe. Actually I'm running one myself, but you don't want the wimpy thing I've got---I should have gone a different direction from the start, but I didn't want to have to run a wire. So I bought a telephone line network--but it worked so shoddily, we wound up running a telephone line directly between both machines, instead of running the network through the home phone line.... $100 later, I found I should have just bought two nic cards and some wire....

Oh well, it runs fast enough that we can share some files and cable internet access.

Let me try to be more specific:

I'm looking for a hardware setup.

I.E. a ethernet/wireless combo router and wireless reciever for the computer in the other room.

Ahh Bob, you are talking about crossover cable arn't you? Heh, wonderful stuff. I have a 100 mbs network between two computers that are sitting next to each other just for gaming purposes. Very nice setup. Very fast. They have tons of ram, huge VAC's, and stable PIII's. Got to love gaming. Ohh, the cable and NIC's cost me $35 total. I'm pretty sure it would take you about $50 (or less) and 2 hours to rewire your house for a faster and more reliable network. Jus a thought.

Bob, we have CompUSA's, Fry's, Micro Center, Best Buy's, Circuit City's - pretty much everything.

I'd like to get _hardware_ (and setup) recommendations from you guys before I do buy though.

You've got more than me--we don't have Frys or Micro Center in St. Louis.... Hey, I thought you lived in a shack in the outback, eating bar-b-que shrimp and "bloomin' onions" every night and carrying a big knife..... And maybe driving a subaru.....

Damn... has the media misled me?

Don't all the women look like Nicole Kidman?

Vipe,
Here you go....

Except for the wireless part, it sounds like the exact same thing I've done. One cable line in, three PCs all sharing it.

There are other equipment vendors out there, but I recommend Linksys. (www.linksys.com)
Since you're looking to run a wireless connection to the 3rd box, I'd go with this 4-port router/switch. (http://www.linksys.com/Products/product ... 2&prid=173)

Having a router and switch all in one box really helps, plus, it acts as your firewall too. Keeping your machines protected from the wilds of broadband.

Setup and configuration is incredibly easy. If you know your way around a simple network, you could have all three boxes up and running on the net in 10 minutes.

Shopping list:
Linksys router/switch
10/100 network card for two local machines
Linksys wireless adapter for remote machine.
CAT5 network cable (RJ45 ends)

(Don't scrimp on the NICs either. You're better off spending a few extra bucks for stability. Can't go wrong with 3Com.)

Hope this helps.

NICOLE... god I hope not, I really hated that red hair and horid freckles, although she does look pretty hot since she died her hair blonde. But nope, the women over here are a lot better than Nicole, only problem... they obviously can't act.

What i would do...
4 network cards = $30
1 4 port Hub = $30
Cat 5 = Varies

I'd forget wireless unless you go to the new wireless standard. I had bad experiences with wireless and unless you know your not going to get any interference i would just get a long cable.

Put 2 NICS in the box connected to the cable, one for cable other for the hub, assign an ip of say 10.0.0.1 for the one conneted to the hub. put the other nics in the boxes and assign them a 10.0.0. address. Install Internet connection sharing on the box connected to the net, or get some other shareing software. Set the gateway on the other boxes to 10.0.0.1 and enter DNS information.

You can get the equipment from comready.com for pretty cheap although they are out of 10/100 hubs it would seem. Doing it this way leaves you room for expansion, if you feel you may need more ports in the future go to an 8 port hub. just my 2 cents
