If you use a 56K modem, US Robotics is offering an upgrade to the v.92 standard for some modems. Go......Here

I'd be careful with that... I've noticed if you use V.92 with a non-v.92 ISP it is a bit flakier... Not alot but instead of being on a week with out a disconnect its usually about a day or two, and if your not use'n v.92 why bother? but i'd download it any way for when/if the isp upgrades.

Most place's i've talked to say they are not going to do a widespread upgrad to v.92, but their new equipment they put in should be compatable. Mainly because alot of the equipment out there cannot be upgrade by firmware to v.92 (like alot of the Ascend Max Modems) I also noticed the only thing that v.92 really offers is the higher upload rate, the other features don't appear to work well. Of course i'm practically in the middle of nowhere and people round here are lucky to connect at 26.4 most of the time.

From what I have been told, the v.92 modem requests data faster so you recieve data faster. I actually like this concept because I know for a fact that my dial up requests data faster then some high-speed connections, so even though they may download 20 to 50 times faster then I can, I load a page twice as fast as they do.

Thanks for the heads up John, I'm downloading it right now.

Good news is that I can finally get cable net access, can't wait.

Man I've been waiting when 2 years ago they said it would be a year later, and a year later they said it would be a year later.

John and Andrew have a 5610A as well, no?

They don't provide very clear install instructions (actually, they give 3 - website, readme, & html file).

When I click 'Instant Update' it wants tries to download from the net, but then it can't connect because the program is using the modem port. =(

With v90 max upload is 33kbps, with v.92 max upload is 44kbps give or take. The max i've seen anyone connect at for up is 36kbps with v.92. while 33kbps is fairly common. While it dosn't download any quicker, if you do get a good upload connection it may seem more responsive but i highly doubt it would really noticeable when just browsing. but i can't give you any real life numbers cause i never noticed that i connect above 33k on upload.

Numbers and features are better, even marginally, in V92. Quite a few ISP's haven't upgraded, since the implementation over a year ago.
Mine, quite pointedly, said they had no intention of upgrading, unless new equipment came so.
Look out cable.

You have to download it to your HD and then install. If you look further onsite, I believe there are instructions to the fact. If your modem qualifies under the drop down menu, it will take you automatically to the page to download it to your HD. I use a download mgr. and it works both, on http and ftp download sites.

I had no problem downloading and installing the control center itself - the online directions, program manual, and readme file all conflict each other.

The control center said it was getting updates from the website - but I can't get online with the control center running (and vice versa). I uninstalled it.

Anyhow, I connect at 14.4 Kbps now - but that could be my shoddy ISP.
