Tried it w/ regular old Elmer's white glue. Seems to be working better than the spray adhesive at least.

Hold on that would make this the first post after 70, OK I guess you were right.

use RTV silicone calk and a mount made of a high density material such as nylon sheet or three quarter
inch high density fiber board. The RTV acts a gasket and cures by air you would then be able to mount this to the case via small nut and bolts and it would still be coupled while the fan would be decoupled from the case. GE makes a RTV silicone that is mil-spec (about 10 bucks a tube) That is excellant for this application. If ya can't find that household RTV calk the kind that goes around windows would work....just does not stay as flexable. The mil-spec stuff is white and is used to seal hardware in missle guidance systems.

That sounds pretty cool, albiet a bit involved. Right now, I'm trying some wood glue. Hopefully it will work better than white glue, or at the very least just the same. I'll let you all know in a few hrs when it dries.

That's the stuff! probably what we call contact cement
or the 2nd most common all purpose glue in the world..
(not the PVA white wood glue that you use in kindy :) )
Is it yellow? and you have to let it.. er.. dry a bit or "tack"?
Assuming an answer of affirmative to my earlier question?
I still doubt that it would carry the full weight and vibration, especially if you're using expanded-foam upholstery-rubber.
However as SOD suggests; a more secure job would be obtained by cobbling together a separate isolation coupling. Maybe using 1/2" or 3/4" sheet-rubber or even something like an old car mud-flap, flexible but with enough density to mount the fan separately from the metal case.
