Best Buy is now going to be selling new computers called Matrix. These new computers will be similar price and technology that you could buy online. The low end model will be about $700 cheaper then its rivals comperable system. They have Western Digital hard drives, 2 fire-wire ports, G-force 2 and 3 cards, ATX motherboards with 6 pci slots and 1 agp, 6 standard usb 2.0 slots, Logitech keyboard and mouse, powered speakers, v92 internal modem, high-end sound cards, and a bunch of other stuff I forgot. Go in to Best Buy and take a look at them.

On the side...
I really shouldn't tell you guys this but Best Buy makes twice the normal amount of money on these new Matrix's because Best Buy basically owns the company that makes them. Plus they a lot better then any other computer we have in the stores right now. Also, Best Buy finished it's deal with buying Future Shop in Canada and they now have 40 extera stores. If you guys wanted to invest, now is the time to grab the BBY stock while it is still relitivly low.

We don't have a best buy round here.. i think the nearest ones are in Pittsburgh and Erie... bout ~ 1-2hrs away pending traffic/weather.

Is there any info on these online? I'm looking for some premade stuff for friends and such (cause i hate supporting them)

No info online yet cuse it has been kinda hush, hush, so far, but if you really wanted me to, I can get my info sheet out from my closet and post the technical stuff tonight if anyone is interested. I do know one thing though. They will not be up for purchase till next week and it will be hard to get them because we are going to have trouble keeping them on the shelf. Yeah... I'll post more info on them tonight when I get some more time. You might be able to buy them at http://www.bestbuy.com next week when they come out. They are going to be tons less then the alienware we have on there, but they might not look as cool.

Looks like they have 80-120 gig maxtor hard drives, 1.5-2 ghz P4 generation 2 processors, ATX 6 pci slot 1 agp slot motherboards with 2 standard front usb ports, 4 rear usb ports, and 3 fireware ports. V.92 modems. LiteOn 16x burners and 16x dvd players. 512 megs of DDR ram. And a huge L2 cache (not sure how big, but I was suprised when I heard). Check em out. They range from $900 to $1300.

Forgot to mention that they also have 32 meg nVidia GF 2 - 64 meg nVidia GF2 cards standard and the high end model has a 5.1 sound card.

eh P4, I wonder how anything with a P4 in it can be called high end?

I'd prefer an AMD 1.5 512mb PC2100 ram, IBM 45gig drive. rest sounds alright though.

If i'm not mistake'n P4's have 512k L2 cache and their new server base chips (can't remember the name for some damn reason) will have more. Sorta like the PII/PIII Xeon junk. also if i'm not mistake'n those server base ones are alot more expensive than the already overpriced P4.

VPR. They are a division of Best Buy, but BB will never admit to it because they don't want it labeled as a BB Computer.

I thought it was something like that.

I didn't see any more information on "VPR" - do they have their own little website or something? Who's going to want to buy a brand they've never heard before?

Nevermind the above, searching didn't take long to answer most of my questions:
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnf ... 1_9293.htm

What's really interesting is that on the front page they have the VPR Matrixs and a HP computer listed. The low-end VPR is VERY close to specs as the HP - but for $100 less. Gotta love Corporate America!

What I want to know is, if the hardware is all factory parts directly from the manufacturer (like you could buy for yourself) - or special proprietary OEM hardware (i.e. gateway, compaq, etc)?

The Tower is propriatary (sp?) but everything else is something you can buy and build on your own.
