Have any of you been reading up on this? Networking a local area, through the wireless bands. Would you subscribe to a service like this? Sounds like it could be a viable alternate to some. An excellent opportunity for those persuing that extra income. The downside would be the initial investment and point of returns.

The cable companies are definitely scared that some neighbor will take a nice fast cable feed and make it available to the rest of the neighborhood through a wireless connection--I don't have a specific article cite, but I was just reading this the other day...

Lucky for cable and the phone co. that wireless is slow and prone interference. Unless you put good money into it that is.

The average off the shelf access point will not cut it, as alot of them are at 900mhz (even though alot of them can do higher), and can get interference from a basic cordless phone.

There is a new standard comming out now i believe that should help with that problem though. (802.11c i think) EDIT: along with 2.4ghz WAP's

I had a similar thought but just for my home. I got an access point (linksys wap11 i think it was) and 2 wireless NIC's for my laptops. I expected to get atleast 5mb outa the 11mb possable.. i got less than 1mb 90% of the time. after play'n around with it for a few days i returned it and got a better one (I dont' member the brand but it began with an O) with some improvemnt i was get'n about 3mb. i gave up and returned them all got my $700 back and ran more CAT5.

I did call the place i got it from and they said it was the phone i have that was causeing the problem... I guess it is fairly common.

Personally if i had a choice of use'n wireless and get net for free from a friend or cable and pay for it.. i think i'd choose cable, just because of my luck with wireless

Hey, from what I have read it uses microwaves doesn't it?? So doesn't that like cause radiation or something, is wireless safe or is it just like a garrage door opener or a radio?
I answer rhetorical questions for my own enjoyment.

My understanding (i'm not wireless expert mind you) Is that it uses a simple radio like in a phone. From what i hear the Linksys i was using (WAP11 i think) is on the same range as alot of common Cordless phones (900mhz) I was also sreading that it can do 2.4ghz but for whatever reason it wasn't.

They make infrared and other wireless techs... but again i haven't found a good one.. radio seems to be the best option.

Again i'm not expert in this area, make sure you do more research before ya buy

The microwave version of a Wireless acess point would be quite expensive. Radio signals bounce off objects and that is why we can bounce radio signals off the atmosphere. Microwave though is what we use on space shuttles and deep space probes because it penatrates just about everything. Problem is though, is you have to direct the signal at the reciever... i.e. similar to IR technology except not so picky and it can go through things. A wireless acess point with microwave technology would need to have multiple signal recievers and transmitters on all sides and transmittion speed would depend not only on how far away, but what angle you are comming from.
I'm not 100% sure about this so please, if anyone has any better info correct me before I turn out to be a "salesman talking out of his A$$."

I don't think IR would be used as it need a direct line of sight, which would be dam near impossible and it would probally be pointless using a wireless system if that was the case.

As for radio waves, I always thought the exact same way you do about it, but the other day I was informed that radio waves can travel through objects and that microwaves are actually a form of radio waves, or the other way arround I can't remember. Normally I would just say that he was wrong and I was right, but he is in a position where he would sorta know what he is talking about, so I'm thinking that I might be wrong.

Just recently, 'one' of our members, put this,
as quoted below, at the end of his, 'contribution' ?
Guess who ?

I think that was meant to be taken as a joke.

...they have those in all the neighboring towns here, but I have no idea how they work... They also have these huge antennas, and you get a USB modem with an antenna. As long as you're in range (which is quite long) you can pick up the internet at really high speeds. Pretty interesting stuff. They also have free versions of this at parks, so you can bring your laptop and surf from there. A little chilly in the winter, though. :)

Excellent example and information,
this is the type of thing I'm 'trying to find out,
I 'don't' particularly want technical details,
cause apart from Download speed.
I don't know much else about the details?
That sounds just 'exactly' like what my ISP are
talking about, it's really fast and about half the price,
once you pay the initial set-up costs. aprox. US$500.
Why could'nt one of our 'long term members',
or pumped up, boozy, beery, boorish, bloated,
boring, beastly, ba-ta-d, friends 'help' like this?
Thanx indeed Pogrelz.

I've followed the thread since starting it and don't seem to recall anyone asking for info of any calibre. (Maybe I'm overlooking something.) I see several opinions,(started going slightly OT, after a few post) but anything pertaining to this can be found by an intuitive use of search engines faster than it takes me to write this post.

There is a recipe for using a hunk of wire and a empty Pringles can that works nicely for listening in. But you didn't get that from me. (Although my next door neighboor likes to talk to his wife when she is at the grocery store)
