CA Anti-virus

Post by JohnT » 09/08/08, 10:38 am

One of my first anti-virus application was from Computer Associates, back in the days of free software. I used them for over 4 yrs then they went shareware, but I persisted as there was none better or more reliable. Then some good freeware ones arrived on the scene.
Now they are giving away a one-year trial....HERE

AVG seems to do the job... So far, free forever.

No doubt free is better, but the best of the so-caled free by my experience has been Avira. If the "free" ones remain free I can always go back after a year.
AVG I will honestly say was not the best for me. Neither was Komodo.

Out of curiosity, what do you do in Adobe Suite you can't do in Linux?

everything, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat. For what is used the the process of publishing our paper no Linux alternatives will work with out switching everyone to the same. Yup I looked into it. Wine was my only option and Distiller seems to hate wine.

if it makes you feel any better all but one server is running Linux.

I went the same route...AVG, Avast...then finally settled on Avira. Only reason on CA now is nostalgia mainly and to see if any improvments have been made.

That's the problem....it doesn't notice somethings that can be problematic and gives notice to things that are not. It's a good free scanner, don't get me wrong, but it's rate of error is a little less than acceptable for my needs.

Yep I was gonna say that... It was missing a virus that even I could detect :)

That combined with the fact that it used to be a lite anti-virus software that would inspect a file when I asked to to and bugger the hell off when I didn't need it. However now it's bloated and just will not leave me the hell alone. The developers have taken the attitude of "we know what's best for you", where as previously they let me control the app.

Yeah I had a look at Avira, but Avast just seemed to be getting better reviews. Why did you switch John?

Is anybody else pissed off that they can't run Sandboxie on Vista now? At least before Vista I could see what the hell programs and installers were doing, which was probably the best way to protect against viruses.

Thanks Microsoft! In your mission to make me safer, you've stopped me from protecting myself.

Not Sanboxie but a good firewall for letting you know what's going in and out and trying to write the registry...the firewall...Online Armor
