Switching from the Windows XP search utility to the 98 one

Post by Ambassador » 01/26/08, 9:39 pm

Is there a registry modification, or anything, that can switch the 2000/XP Search Explorer Window to the good old 98 Search Dialog box?

Thanks.

The thing is though that I looked in XP's shell32.dll using Resource Hacker, and found these:

So it seems to me you should just be able to change the registry a bit so that it will use the old search, since the dialog already exists.

good find. I have no clue how to enable those dialogs though. If they're there, and it's not just a stupid mistake that they are, I'd think a switch should exist to do it. Some of the Virtual plastic folks are whiz-bangs at Resource Hacker - you might present your finding over there, and see what they say. (Would the Knowledge Base be of use?)

There is a small utility that was included with another application years ago that duplicated this feature and somewhat customizable. Google for "Powerdesk 4.0" free version, download, install, go into the Powerdesk folder and remove to another location the file "pdfind.exe". It's a stand-alone utility. Now Powerdesk can be uninstalled if you wish. "pdfind.exe" is not effected. You can just delete it if you find it unusable.

Well, I was hoping not to install a 3rd party app, but I'll try it out. Agent Ransack was pretty good, but it lacked some features and had some unnessary features.

Anyway, I posted at Virtual Plastic's Message Board basically the same topic as this one, but so far no answers. :(

Well I tried the "pdfind" and it was good. Except when I uninstalled powerdesk, it complained that it was missing a DLL. Even when I had the DLL, it still gave an error.

Do I understand correctly......Upon uninstall it complained about the .dll?
I've never encountered this problem. There are no .dll's associated with pdfind.exe.
