It's hard for me to get past the blatent "this was done because we are in 3D" scenes, which are even scattered all though the 2D trailer:

When a director resorts to this gain a bigger audience, I lose respect for them.
I answer rhetorical questions for my own enjoyment.

Critics seem to like it:

96% on Rotten Tomatoes

SF Gate Doesn't:

"Instead of just doing a 3-D movie, he tries to impress us with a deluge of 3-D effects. He takes a delicate narrative and stuffs it to 126 long minutes, so that children, the intended audience, will be squirming and shifting in their seats. (Their parents, too.) And he takes a visual style straight out of the steam-punk films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet ("Delicatessen," "Micmacs") and tries to go their sources one better, with more gears, more gadgets and more gimmicks."

Haven't yet seen it myself, but it's on the schedule.

The reviews make it sound like The City of Lost Children, visually

97% now and 100% if you select "top critics"

Ok, well maybe I can look past the blatant 3D stuff then. But it disturbs me a great deal when a director has to use such cheap tricks.

Ok well reading those reviews on rotten tomatoes have convinced me to give it a shot. Thanks Bob. I suspect the scenes might be less repulsive when watched in 3D.

This one was especially relevant:
