No, I'm not a gamer at all. But I like the vocaloid singing. I also like the original GlaDos version, here (maybe I like the original more): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKR ... re=related )

Oddly, it just all comes together for me: the alien (to me) lyrics, the young girl's singing voice, and the rolling guitar and drum riffs in the oddly easy-going music. Not to mention the sense that the character singing it is not what she might seem on the surface. Very hard to explain taste, Gerry, but I can tell you this. All my life when I've come across something I don't understand, I've always found it very attractive.

So there, I've tried to explain it for the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead.

It's even better if you have played the game. I don't know if you know much about it....

*SPOILER ALERT: Portal is a brilliant (short) game from 2007 which you should play, but if not then read on*

Basically you start the game in a testing facility and you have to make your way through various puzzles of increasing difficulty. At every stage GlaDOS is the robotic, yet humanish voice you hear over the public address system. She promises you cake at the end of the trial, but at the same time she becomes increasingly hostile with the more levels you pass. She she starts increasingly lying and treating you as you get closer to the end and start discovering the world beyond the testing facility. Near the end of this lonely game she introduces you to an aptly named "Companion Cube".
Image
It becomes your only friend in the entire game and then at the end of the level GlaDOS forces you to "euthanize" it before she will let you proceed. When you reach the end of the test you discover the cake was a lie and GlaDOS says goodbye to you and attempts to kill you. If you escape this point you are able to discover more of the world behind the testing facility and eventually you find your way to GlaDOS' central computer where you put an end to her. The game then finishes with that final song and credits that you have seen in the original video that you posted.

*END SPOILER*

So yeah, I really like the song too. Portal 2 comes Feb. 9, 2011 and I can't wait.

Heh! I suspected that. Or some of it (thanks for taking the time to put in a long and complete explanation-it's hard to overstate my satisfaction at that.) I had already gathered some of it from comments on You Tube, especially, "the cake was a lie," which is a huge spoiler. If you know that, all else follows. The words to the song give a lot away too: Running experiments on the living, gloating over the dead. Two questions though: 1. What is aperture science? 2. Who or what is Black Mesa?

And the song's so freakin catchy. This song's been running through my head for a week. I definitely like the original GlaDos version over the vocaloid version. Also I posted 4 other interesting songs in a new thread. Not game related. Try them out--though you may already know all of them?

Aperture science are the creators of the aperture testing facility where Portal is held and I'm guessing the creators of GlaDOS.

Black Mesa is a reference to a facility in Half Life, which is a popular game that is developed by Valve (the creators of Portal). I believe it is also the name of the group you fight in that game.

I've learned a bit more: Black Mesa was competing against Aperture Science in the field of aperture science, until the Black Mesa Incident, which apparently occurred prior to the Portal time frame, Quite a story,,,

"GLaDOS is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. Upon being activated, she almost instantly becomes self-aware, takes control of the facility, locks everyone inside, floods the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin, but is partially halted when she is quickly fitted with a Morality Core. She then begins a permanent cycle of testing, aimed at beating Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology.[6][7] However a few days later, on May 16, the Black Mesa Incident occurs at the Black Mesa Research Facility, allowing aliens to teleport from Xen to Earth, eventually leading to the Combine invasion, stopping GLaDOS's race against Black Mesa.[7]"

Cool, didn't get any of that from the game. There are a lot of associated sites though where I guess they could provide this info.

yes.... interesting. Kind of a classic sci-fi story.... Machine turning on humans, but another wrinkle is, while the AI is going wild, aliens are invading elsewhere, so even if you win against GlaDos, when you exit the facility, the world is gone anyway.

strains of Resident Evil

To get the whole story you have to follow Portal, and the various Half-Life versions (look on the wiki for the Black Mesa Incident), and the websites.

Now I wonder what Portal 2 will add to the story? Due in February 2011.

Well apparently GlaDOS is resurected. The gameplay in the trailers looks pretty amazing.

"GlaDOS is resurected"

She never died. What was the song called? Oh yeah....

But will they link the new game closer to Half-Life and the dimensional leaks Black Mesa's portal experiments have caused, which allowed the invasion by the aliens? GlaDos knows about this. As shown by the line: "When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you." And other hints (her skepticism that Black Mesa would be any help, her preference to stay inside, etc...)

Oh well.... As I said I'm not a gamer, and not going to start now....

But here's a hoot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV4DCyP6 ... re=related

And another--the Still Alive Ringtone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC_8iJwx ... re=related

Wow, you've gone much further into the story line than I have. :)

Did you see the awards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_%28 ... %29#Awards

Also the game only took a few hours to complete. It's really short as it was only meant to be an experiment. :)

Anyway thanks for sharing that ring tone. I'll definitely use it.

yep, saw those awards--must be a great game. But I'll wait for the movie.

As for the ringtone, I like the sound of it, but it's too long and soft for an rt. I found one called "Retro Announcement" which I use mostly,

http://macmost.com/free-iphone-ringtone ... tones.html

and sometimes I use the CTU phone tone, a la Jack Bauer

http://gallery.mobile9.com/f/14254/

I also like the iphone's Sci-Fi rt.

Actually I think I already saw the movie; except for the apertures, it has a lot in common with Resident Evil.

BTW, when are you going to read Neuromancer? Send you a copy if you like....
