GamesIndustry.biz links oddly when added Post 07/03/07, 9:32 am   Reply with quote

I added http://www.gamesindustry.biz/ as a custom feed, but for some odd reason, a string of 6 spaces gets added between the DailyRotation part of the url and the GamesIndustry.biz part, causing a broken link.

Easily repeated (in both Firefox 2 and Opera 9):

(1) Go to http://www.gamesindustry.biz/ and right-click on the RSS link (lower right), choose "copy link location".

(2) Go to http://www.dailyrotation.com and scroll down, paste the link into the "Add more sites" textbox, then click the "SAVE ALL OPTIONS" button below to add the feed.

(3) Confirm this bug by clicking on any story link below the main "GamesIndustry.biz" header. Notice that the link to the main page works fine.

Is this a bug in the DR code, or should I be reporting this to GI.biz?

The problem is the gamesindustrybiz feed has all sorts of gratuitous whitespace in it... (Look at it in view source from your browser)...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/rss/gamesindustry_news_feed.rss

See how the first link tag is separated from the link by 6 spaces and a break? I've written them about this -- no answer.... I could do something on my side, but I hate to make a hack for one site only when the parser works fine for all other sites. They were on the Recommended Sites list, but I removed them a month or so ago because of this problem.

I may be able to contact them via an acquaintance. I'll see if that works/helps.

That and the useless namespace that points to nothing.

Why do ppl make rss harder than it has to be?

Bob could you add a check that normalizes whitespace for all as part of a quality check before the feed is added?

Excellent! Try as I may, I cannot find another RSS feed that does that, so I have to wonder why they coded it that way. Even their sister sites don't have the linefeed+whitespace in their code, so it's a baffler.
